One bag for two nights

For a weekend away, one bag you can carry yourself is enough if you pack for two days rather than for every eventuality. As a rule of thumb: one top per day, one pair of trousers for everything, a jumper and the shoes you travel in.

Something smarter for the evening is worth it if a restaurant or a concert is planned. Pack gym kit only if you will really use it, because on a short trip space is what runs out first. Pyjamas and a rain jacket that folds up small still fit.

What short trips most often miss

On a short trip, what goes missing is usually what sits in the bathroom at home without a second thought. Contact lenses, glasses, medication, charging cable and hairbrush are easily left behind, because nobody packs the whole toiletry bag for two nights. A small second toiletry bag that always stays packed in the cupboard solves this for every weekend to come.

Just as easy to forget: the house keys, if someone else gets home first, and the umbrella, if you only checked the forecast for the journey out. Tickets for a concert or an exhibition are best kept in one place on your phone before you leave, not spread across three emails.

By train, car or plane for the weekend

How you travel shapes what belongs on the list. By train you need your ticket, your railcard and something to eat and drink on the way; by car, your driving licence. If you fly with hand luggage only, liquids go in small containers; check with your airline before you fly which sizes are allowed.

Once you are there, a daypack or a tote bag comes in handy, because your holdall stays at the hotel and you still have water, umbrella and sunglasses with you.

The list for next weekend

Weekend trips repeat themselves: the same bag, two nights, often the same place. After the trip you archive the list, and next time you start again with “Pack again”, every tick reset.

Before that, note in the review what you did not need and what was missing. Then the unnecessary stays at home next time, and whatever you forgot is already on the list. That way the list gets a little more accurate with every weekend.

How it works

  1. “Start with this list” opens the template – once you have signed in with your email address.

  2. Add more templates, such as “Before leaving” for the water, the heating and the plants. Nothing appears twice.

  3. Create the list, tick it off, archive it after the trip – and pack it again next time.
